Supervision: Offering a compassionate space for you to land, explore and grow
Supervision
What to expect from supervision with me?
Each supervisory relationship is different because you bring your unique set of experiences, needs and ways of working. I want to work with you in a way that fits your uniqueness and individual needs; this is something we navigate together so that the space offers space for reflection, connection and growth.
Whether your focus is to reflect on clients using a CFT framework, to deepen your knowledge and skills in CFT and a particular issue and/or strengthen your resources as you care for yourself as a therapist, I aim to offer a space embodying the qualities of compassion where you can bring your whole self. Whether you are an experienced CF Therapist or have a little knowledge and training you are welcome.
As a supervisor, I come with many years of practicing and embodying the principles of CFT. I work from a foundation of shared humanity, curiosity and compassion. We can explore the ways in which the work you’re doing supports those you’re working with, as well as bringing awareness to how it may impact on you. This is different from therapy in that the work you do is at the core of our focus, the relationship we have supports you and in turn those you work with.
What is Compassion Focused Supervision?
Compassion Focused Therapy is a model often referred to as best learned from the ‘inside out’. Whichever aspect of practice we are focusing on (i.e. formulation, psychoeducation, Fears and Blocks), in Compassion Focused Supervision we can find support and guidance in the practices and wisdom of the model. By increasing awareness of our own ‘tricky brains’, flows of compassion and balance of the three emotional systems (Threat, Drive and Soothing), we can draw on our own inner wisdom to be able to better support clients.
We can utilise the practices common in CFT to support our own regulation and access our compassionate wisdom, such as Soothing Rhythm Breathing, Imagery and Chair Work/Role Taking. As clinicians, I believe it is important we have our own ‘Compassionate Kit Bag’, so we can be a safe harbour for others while ensuring we aren’t using more resources than we are offering to ourselves.
Qualifications and experience
I trained as a supervisor with the Compassionate Mind Foundation in their first cohort of supervisors in-person training. As a supervisor, I bring my clinical experience working in the NHS, charity sector and private practice, my extensive training in CFT (including a PG Cert in CFT from University of Derby), as well as all the other training I have done and years of my own supervision with advanced Compassion Focused Psychotherapists.
In practice, I have a lot of experience in supervising clinicians in different settings, including groups and individuals in the NHS and HSE in Ireland, practitioners in private practice and those working in the charity sector. I am trained in and have worked with teams using the Compassion Focused Staff Support model in healthcare, probation and business sectors. I’ve been fortunate to learn from brilliant and inspiring people in the CFT world and outside it, including Kate Lucre and receiving mentoring from Deidre Fay.
Throughout my career I have worked in support and supervisory roles. In my previous experience as a Mental Health Nurse, I completed a post graduate qualification to mentor student and newly qualified nurses, skills I learned then continue to be helpful today in clinical supervision of therapists/clinicians. I continue to hold registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
